James Maitland Stewart nació el 20 de mayo de 1908 en Indiana, Pennsylvania. Con la recomendación de la actriz y columnista Hedda Hopper, Jimmy realizó una prueba para la Metro Goldwyn Mayer, estudio que le contrataría a mediados de los años 30. Su primer papel fue en "The Murder Man" (1935), una película dirigida por Tim Whelan y protagonizada por Spencer Tracy. A partir de su primera primera película adoptó su nombre artístico. En los cinco años siguientes participó en 24 películas y será por una de ellas, "Historias de Filadelfia" (1940), de George Cukor por la que ganaría un Oscar al mejor actor y un Leon de oro en el Festival de Venecia. Consiguió también nominaciones al Oscar en la categoría de mejor actor por las películas "¡Qué bello es vivir!", "El invisible Harvey" y "Anatomía de un asesinato".James Stewart trabajó todos los géneros y con todos los grandes directores (Hitchcock, Mann, Cukor, Ford,...) lo que no le despojó de su sencillez y normalidad.
